Facial Placeholder aftercare: first 48 hours & what to avoid

By The Well - Holistic Facial Spa | October 19, 2026

I love hearing “my skin has never felt better” after a facial. The fastest way to protect that fresh glow is simple: for the first 48 hours, keep your skin calm and shielded. That means steady SPF, no heavy sweating or heat, and no ocean or pool time, which matters a lot here in sunny La Jolla.

Facial Placeholder aftercare in La Jolla: first 48 hours and what to avoid

Quick rule to remember: if it heats you up, scrubs you down, or bakes you in the sun, it can irritate your skin and dull the results you just paid for.

First 24 hours after Facial Placeholder: keep it cool, clean, protected

Facial Placeholder is the appointment you book when you’re not sure what your skin needs. I take time to talk through your goals, then choose the treatment that fits. Because the exact services can vary, I keep aftercare straightforward and skin-safe across the board.

Do this the day of your facial

  • Apply broad-spectrum SPF if you’re outside, even for a quick drive or errand. La Jolla sun adds up fast.
  • Cleanse gently in the evening if you need to. Use lukewarm water, not hot.
  • Moisturize lightly to support your barrier. Think comfort, not “active” products.
  • Keep hands off your face. No picking, no “just checking” texture in the mirror.

Avoid this for the first 24 hours

  • Makeup if you can skip it. If you must wear it, keep it minimal and remove it gently.
  • Hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga. Heat tends to increase redness and sensitivity.
  • Hard workouts that leave you sweaty and flushed.
  • Anything scratchy or exfoliating, including scrubs and cleansing brushes.

If you want movement, a short shaded walk around La Jolla Village or the Muirlands area is usually a better choice than a sweaty workout. Your skin gets to stay calm, and you still get that post-facial “I feel amazing” energy.

24 to 48 hours: the “don’t ruin it” window for sweat, sun, ocean, and pools

Most of the little post-facial issues I see come from four things: heat, sweat, sun, and salt or chlorine. If you protect your skin from those for two full days, you’re usually setting yourself up for that smooth, glowy look people notice.

Exercise after a facial

I generally recommend skipping strenuous exercise for 48 hours. Sweat, friction, and heat can trigger redness, bumps, or irritation. If you have to move, keep it easy: light walking, gentle stretching, and cool indoor temps.

Ocean and pool rules (especially in coastal La Jolla)

Hold off on the ocean and pool for 48 hours. Saltwater and chlorine can sting and dry you out, and they’re not kind to freshly treated skin. If you’re a beach person, plan your facial around it. Early or later appointments can help you enjoy the coastline without taking chances the same day.

SPF matters more than you think: even if it’s breezy and cool, UV still hits. Reapply if you’re outside, and choose shade when you can.

The first week: keep the glow, skip the “actives” and the mirror-picking

After a great facial, it’s tempting to throw your whole routine at your skin because you feel so smooth. Don’t. Your skin usually does best when you keep things boring for a few days.

Avoid these for at least 3 to 7 days

  • Retinoids and retinol
  • AHAs and BHAs (glycolic, lactic, salicylic)
  • Physical scrubs and textured exfoliating pads
  • At-home peels or strong “tingly” treatments
  • Picking at flakes, extractions at home, or squeezing pores

Keep doing this all week

  • Daily SPF, even if you’re not “sunbathing.”
  • Gentle cleanse morning and night, especially if you’re around UCSD, Torrey Pines, or Pacific Beach and you’re in the car a lot.
  • Barrier-supporting moisturizer that doesn’t sting when you apply it.

Post-facial skincare tips: a simple routine that won’t fight your results

If you’re wondering what to do after Facial Placeholder, I’d rather you go too gentle than too aggressive. Here’s the routine that tends to keep skin happy while it settles.

Cleanser: fragrance-free, non-foaming or low-foam, and no exfoliating acids for a few days.

Moisturizer: simple and barrier-focused. If it burns going on, stop and tell me.

Sunscreen: broad-spectrum SPF every morning, and reapply if you’re outside. This is non-negotiable in La Jolla.

And if you booked Facial Placeholder because you weren’t sure what your skin needed, I’ll send you home with clear next steps. No guessing, no 12-step routine.

Redness, sensitivity, and when to call me (I’d rather you ask)

A little redness or warmth right after a facial is common, especially if you had extractions or more hands-on work. It should calm down, not ramp up. I’m also very mindful with reactive and sensitive skin, and I want you to feel supported after you leave.

Usually normal

  • Mild redness that fades within a day
  • Slight tightness that improves with moisturizer
  • Skin that feels extra “clean” or a bit sensitive to hot water

Reach out ASAP

  • Intense pain or burning that doesn’t settle
  • Spreading rash or swelling
  • Open skin, weeping, or signs of infection
  • Fever or feeling unwell

“I trust her implicitly with anything she does to my face, as I have never had a reaction to a single facial, even with very reactive/rosacea-proned skin!”

If you have a quick question during your first 48 hours, reach out. I’d rather help you protect your result than have you wonder if something is “normal.” If you’re ready to explore what else I do beyond Facial Placeholder, you can also read about facials and treatments in La Jolla Village.

Need help planning around beach days or workouts? I’ll talk it through with you so you can keep your schedule and keep your skin happy.
